The Waterman is a terrific historical novel set in revolutionary times. The author brings life to a young patriot, Dan Saunders, who serves on George Washington’s staff and leads in the successful effort to move 59 large cannon in the winter of 1775-76 from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston, in time to enable Washington’s retake of the city.

It is an enjoyable, easy, read, which captures the spirit and feel of early America. Around this historically significant transportation of the cannons, van den Berg weaves numerous nautical side adventures set in the Annapolis area and the Florida Keys. His writings reveal a true student of watermen of that day. It is a fascinating read. I highly recommend it.
